All time favorite book classics

“Clearly one must read every good book at least once every ten years.”

 C.S. Lewis

My Favorite quotes:

  •  “I have said no such thing. I am only resolved to act in that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you,“I am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but not one with such justice. I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles, I laugh.”  or to any person so wholly unconnected with me.”
  • “There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of merit or sense.”
  • “To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love”
  • “I am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but not one with such justice. I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles, I laugh.”
  • “You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.”
  • “You must learn some of my philosophy. Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.”

My favorite quotes:

  • “I would always rather be happy than dignified.”
  • “Jane, be still; don’t struggle so like a wild, frantic bird, that is rending its own plumage in its desperation.”
“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being, with an independent will; which I now exert to leave you.”
  • “If all the world hated you and believed you wicked, while your own conscience approved of you and absolved you from guilt, you would not be without friends.”
  • “I am not an angel,’ I asserted; ‘and I will not be one till I die: I will be myself. Mr. Rochester, you must neither expect nor exact anything celestial of me – for you will not get it, any more than I shall get it of you: which I do not at all anticipate.”
  • “I can live alone, if self-respect, and circumstances require me so to do. I need not sell my soul to buy bliss. I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all extraneous delights should be withheld, or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.”
  • “Reader, I married him.”

My favorite quotes:

  • “The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.”
  • “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”
  • “I wasn’t actually in love, but I felt a sort of tender curiosity.”
  • “You see I usually find myself among strangers because I drift here and there trying to forget the sad things that happened to me.”
  • “Reserving judgements is a matter of infinite hope.”
  • “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”
  • “It’s a great advantage not to drink among hard drinking people.”
  • “If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him”

My favorite quotes:

  • “My dear, I don’t give a damn.”
  • “Sir,”she said,”you are no gentleman!”
An apt observation,”he answered airily.”And, you, Miss, are no lady.”
  • “Death, taxes and childbirth! There’s never any convenient time for any of them.”
  • “You’re so brutal to those who love you, Scarlett. You take their love and hold it over their heads like a whip.”
  • “Life’s under no obligation to give us what we expect. We take what we get and are thankful it’s no worse than it is.”
  • “Child, it’s a very bad thing for a woman to face the worst that can happen to her, because after she’s faced the worst she can’t ever really fear anything again. …Scarlett, always save something to fear— even as you save something to love…”
  • “Burdens are for shoulders strong enough to carry them.”

My favorite quotes:

  • “People in their right minds never take pride in their talents.”
  • “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it – whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, he is trash.”
  • “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
  • “With him, life was routine; without him, life was unbearable.”
  • “When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sake. But don’t make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion faster than adults, and evasion simply muddles ‘em.”
  • “It’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you.”
  • “You can choose your friends but you sho’ can’t choose your family, an’ they’re still kin to you no matter whether you acknowledge ‘em or not, and it makes you look right silly when you don’t.”

My favorite quotes:

  • “He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.”
  • “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”
  • “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever.”
  • “If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.”
  • “If you loved someone, you loved him, and when you had nothing else to give, you still gave him love.”
  • “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.”
  • “Confession is not betrayal. What you say or do doesn’t matter; only feelings matter. If they could make me stop loving you-that would be the real betrayal.”
  • “There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad.”

Happy reading!
